A tennis academy asked the consultant to create a two hour motivational talk and workshop centred around resilience, fun and stress for young tennis players aged 8-16 years old.
The consultant used personal film footage to illustrate the reality of resilience in adversity, also introducing the science of toughness theory. Techniques for maximising fun and pleasure were introduced, with the players learning how to savour chocolate and then the sweetness of hitting the perfect feeling shot. Whilst competitive athletes experience stress, they also often experience ‘good stress’ in the form of the optimal experience of flow, so a workshop introducing this notion was enjoyed.
The feedback from both the players and coaches was overwhelmingly positive, “I loved the films and the stories the lady told” (player) and “this perfectly showed the players what grit and resilience really is, how to become more gritty, to remember to love the game, and not always think that stress is a bad thing. Perfect for them in tennis and life” (coach).
